Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji was born on December 25, 1970, to the family of a renowned civil servant-turned-politician and former Governor of Abia State and Senator representing Abia Central Senatorial District, His Excellency, Sen. Theodore Ahamefule Orji, and Chief Mrs. Mercy Odochi Orji of Amaokwe, Ugba Village, Ugba Autonomous Community, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
Popularly known as the Speaker Emeritus, Rt. Hon. Orji commenced his educational journey at Orji Town Primary School, Owerri (1976–1982) and later attended Government Secondary School, Owerri (1982–1987). He gained admission into the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering in 1996.
A seasoned legislator, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji served as the 11th Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly from June 2019 to June 2023. He was first elected into the Abia State House of Assembly in 2015 to represent Umuahia Central State Constituency, during which he served as Majority Leader for four years. He was re-elected in the 2019 general elections on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
During his tenure as Speaker, he demonstrated exceptional leadership, fostering unity among members of the House, strengthening democratic institutions, and championing people-oriented policies that advanced the development and welfare of the citizens of Abia State. Beyond the parliamentary chambers, he is widely respected for his humility, accessibility, and unrelenting commitment to public service.
Rt. Hon. Chinedum Enyinnaya Orji is a Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (FNSE), a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (FNICE), and a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Transport and Highway Engineers (FNITHE), an honour he received recently.
He is also a Knight of the Anglican Communion, a distinction that reflects his deep devotion to God, steadfast commitment to church growth, and embodiment of Christian virtues.
In recognition of his outstanding service to humanity, he received the The Sun Public Service Award (2020) by The Sun Publishing Limited, publishers of The Daily Sun Newspapers, and was named Most Outstanding Speaker of the Year (2021) by Champion Newspapers Limited for his sterling leadership and immense contributions to governance.
Beyond politics, Rt. Hon. Chinedum E. Orji, FNSE, FNICE, FNITHE, has distinguished himself as a philanthropist extraordinaire, touching countless lives through his impactful humanitarian interventions. Through his Direct Touch Initiative, he has empowered numerous Abians—especially youths and women—through skills acquisition and capacity building programmes, earning him widespread commendations and honours.
He is happily married, and the union is blessed with children.
