In what has been described as an “unprecedented milestone for a sub-national,” Abia State is poised to witness a wave of infrastructure development as Governor Alex Otti prepares to commission and flag off a record-breaking 55 projects across the state in the coming weeks.
This bold stride was unveiled by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing at the Government House, Umuahia.
“As promised by His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, the state will witness an unprecedented commissioning and flag-off of projects,” Prince Kanu announced. “Out of the 55 projects, 42 are ready for commissioning, while 13 new ones will be flagged off.”
The projects span multiple sectors, including:
- 17 primary healthcare centres across the state’s 17 LGAs,
- 14 road infrastructure projects,
- and developments across ministries such as Power & Public Utilities, Lands & Housing, Trade & Commerce, and strategic agencies like the Greater Aba and Greater Ohafia Development Authorities.
“This is a bold testimony of the Governor’s transformative agenda in just two years,” Kanu noted.
The Commissioner also raised a red flag on the recent diphtheria outbreak in neighbouring Imo State, urging Abians to remain vigilant.
Preventive measures highlighted include:
- Vaccination for children and unvaccinated adults,
- Immediate medical attention for symptomatic individuals,
- Emphasis on hygiene and community surveillance.
However, it wasn’t all gloom. Kanu revealed a major health victory: Abia State has officially been declared free of river blindness by the Federal Ministry of Health, ending a 30-year fight involving mass drug administration.
As part of efforts to enhance public safety, the government is also launching a crackdown on one-way driving, which has become a menace in cities like Umuahia and Aba.
A newly formed enforcement team will impose heavy fines, vehicle impoundments, and even auctions of unclaimed vehicles to deter the trend.
Abia’s youths are also receiving attention.
A Youth Stakeholders Town Hall Meeting will be hosted on June 5th, bringing together key voices to discuss solutions to pressing issues such as unemployment, insecurity, and drug abuse.
In sports, Abia’s investment is paying off. The state’s contingent at the recently concluded National Sports Festival bagged an impressive 70 medals — 12 gold, 18 silver, and 40 bronze — earning Abia the 11th spot on the national medals table.
From healthcare to roads, youth empowerment to public safety, Governor Alex Otti’s administration is not just making promises — it’s laying foundations and cutting ribbons. As Abians brace for the transformation, the next few weeks may well define a new chapter in the state’s development journey.
