A New Abia Rises : Governor Otti Marks 2 Years Of Transformative Leadership with Bold Vision for the Future

In a landmark address marking the second anniversary of this administration, Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, declared that Abia State is “in a good place,” highlighting sweeping reforms and achievements that have positioned the state on the path to prosperity, infrastructure renewal, and inclusive governance.

Speaking at a commemorative event at the Umuahia Township Stadium, during the grand finale of the activities marking his 2nd year anniversary in office, the governor delivered a powerful and optimistic speech titled “The New Abia at Two: Sustaining the Momentum,” .

He,however,  thanked the people of Abia for their  support in what he described as a “liberation movement” that dismantled years of leadership failure and restored hope to millions.

“I want to thank you for the massive support that we received before the election, during the election, and most importantly, after the swearing-in on the 29th of May, 2023. We cannot take your support for granted.

“May 29 no longer just marks a change in political leadership. It has become a symbol of rebirth — a turning point for our people and proof of what we can achieve when we come together with purpose,” Otti said to rousing applause.

In a detailed progress report, Governor Otti highlighted significant milestones:

237 roads constructed or rehabilitated across all LGAs, including Port Harcourt Road and Arochukwu-Ndi Okereke-Ozuabam Road.

Timely payment of salaries and pensions, with arrears exceeding N40 billion cleared and 100% monthly pension payments now the norm.

Modernisation of infrastructure, including renovation of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Secretariat and completion of the JAAC building.

Launch of a mass transit system with electric-powered buses and accompanying infrastructure slated to begin operation by Q3 2025.

Investing in Youth and the Future

The governor reiterated his focus on youth empowerment, with over 10,000 nano entrepreneurs receiving support and a massive investment in education:

20% of the state budget directed to education for two years running.

Recruitment of over 5,300 teachers, with plans to add 4,000 more in core STEM and cultural subjects like History and Igbo Language.

“We’re not just building roads and schools. We are building the future of Abia, powered by a young, educated, and inspired generation,” he emphasized.

Healthcare and Energy Reforms

In healthcare, more than 100 primary health centres have been revitalized, new general hospitals are underway, and the ABSUTH has regained full accreditation.

Governor Otti emphasized on the proposed medical city and its potentials, which is intended to address the medical needs of all people from Nigeria, reverse medical tourism, which statistics show that we spend between $2 to $2.5 Billion Dollars annually to take care of our health outside Nigeria.

“The idea of the medical village is that anywhere you are in Nigeria, if you think of proper Healthcare delivery system, you will think of Abia State.

Otti also detailed ambitious energy initiatives, including a partnership with the EU-backed Nigeria Solar for Health Project, and negotiations with EEDC to acquire Umuahia’s ring fence to localize electricity supply.

“We Are Just Getting Started”

Despite the progress, Otti was quick to caution against complacency:

“It is not yet uhuru. The task ahead remains enormous, and we must stay focused. What we’ve started must be sustained  and together, we will finish strong.”

He extended heartfelt gratitude to volunteers, the legislature, judiciary, and strategic advisory councils, including global economic experts and retired security officers guiding policy and execution.

“We promised that Abia will be great in our lifetime. That promise still stands — and it shall be fulfilled.”

As Abia turns a new chapter under Governor Otti’s stewardship, hopes are high, and momentum remains strong for what many are calling “a true people’s government.”

He noted that his administration has ended the dark era of owing civil servants and pensioners in the State.

The Governor said that his government is moving in the right direction “What we are doing as a Government is to create the enabling environment for our businesses to thrive.

“So, when you see the roads that we are building, when you see us retrofitting the markets, when you see us cleaning up the environment, we are doing that, so that your businesses will thrive.

Governor Otti further thanked Abians for the massive support he has continued to receive from them, and assured that the 3rd year of his administration would witness the sustained momentum in line with the theme of the event.

The governor closed by honoring the memories of those who paid the ultimate price for Abia’s freedom and pledged continued transparency, accountability, and citizen-focused governance.

In their speeches on behalf of the National Assembly, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe and Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, while affirming the earlier position of their counterparts at the State House of Assembly in throwing their support for the Governor, maintained that, there is no vacancy in Abia Government House in 2027.

Earlier, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Emeruwa and the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Austin Meregini moved a motion in support of the second term bid of Governor Alex Otti, saying that he has performed credibly in office .

They passed a vote of confidence on the Governor in approval of his leadership style and assured him of their continuous support to achieve good governance in the State, and described the Governor as a gift to Abia.

In a goodwill message on behalf of the business community in Abia State , Chief Dr. David Ogba Onuoha said that the Governor’s 2 years in office has been 2 years of restoration.

He thanked the Governor for redefining governance in Abia State and assured of the support of the business community to his Government.

The Umuahia Township Stadium was filled to capacity and the vehicular movement around the State capital was managed and controlled by the Law EEnforcement Personnels to accommodate the jubilant crowd who came out in their numbers to celebrate the second year anniversary of the Governor’s transformational and impactful leadership.

The occasion was graced by Nigeria music super star, Flavour and Abia born big brands in the entertainment industry, Basket Mouth, Ruffcoin, Exnel, Onye Army and a host of other artistes.
