Governor Otti’s Wife Leads Transformative Humanitarian Outreach To Afara Correctional Facility

In a moving show of empathy and commitment to inclusive governance, the wife of the Governor of Abia State, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, visited the Afara Correctional Facility in Umuahia as part of the second anniversary celebrations of the Otti-led administration.
The visit, held under the theme of compassion and rehabilitation, highlighted the administration’s overwhelming belief in the dignity and potential of every citizen regardless of their circumstances.

Speaking directly to the inmates, Mrs. Otti encouraged them to remain hopeful, engage in self-reflection, and take deliberate steps toward personal transformation.
“This facility is not the end of your story, but a place of renewal,” she said. “You still have a future, and you must begin now to prepare for it.”

Her Excellency emphasized that rehabilitation is a key focus of her advocacy, announcing plans to scale up skill acquisition and empowerment programs within the facility.
She noted that similar interventions have already been introduced in the past, with plans for expansion in order to give inmates the tools they need to reintegrate into society and rebuild their lives post-incarceration.

Highlighting the broader justice reform efforts of the current administration, Mrs. Otti revealed ongoing partnerships with the Ministry of Justice, legal aid bodies, and civil society organizations aimed at improving access to justice for inmates who lack proper legal representation.
“Our vision is a correctional system that rehabilitates, not rejects,” she asserted.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Maureen Aghukwa, also addressed the inmates, commending the Governor and his wife for prioritizing the welfare of the vulnerable.
She urged the inmates to see their time in custody as a temporary phase and to embrace every opportunity for personal growth and positive change.

The Controller of the Abia State Correctional Headquarters, CP Mrs. Josephine Ogbeifun, warmly welcomed the delegation and expressed heartfelt gratitude for the visit.

She described Mrs. Otti as a consistent and compassionate ally to the facility, praising her for always standing by the correctional community at critical moments.

“Her Excellency is more than a benefactor—she is a mother figure to both the staff and inmates,” CP Ogbeifun stated, offering prayers for her continued strength and success.

In a poignant moment, an inmate who spoke on behalf of his fellow prisoners expressed deep appreciation to Mrs. Otti for what he described as a “motherly gesture” that had rekindled their hope and restored their sense of dignity.

The outreach event featured generous donations, including a cow, bags of rice and beans, toiletries, and cash support to the inmates. Also present were the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Adaeze Emetu, and several senior government officials, whose presence underscored the administration’s unified approach to humane and inclusive governance.

This latest outreach to the Afara Correctional Facility reaffirms the Otti administration’s core commitment to building a compassionate state where no one is left behind—not even those behind bars.
