Governor Alex Otti Reaffirms Commitment To Workers’ Welfare At 2026 May Day Celebration
Governor Alex Chioma Otti of Abia State has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare, dignity of labour, and inclusive economic growth, as workers across the state marked the 2026 International Workers’ Day.
Speaking at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the governor represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu described labour as the foundation of civilisation and a key driver of economic progress and human fulfilment.
He commended Abia workers for their resilience, dedication, and productivity, noting that their contributions have continued to position the state as a model of integrity and enterprise.
“Labour, in its truest form, is about preserving human dignity,” Otti stated, emphasizing that all workers—across formal and informal sectors play critical roles in sustaining the economy.
The governor credited the workforce for advancing the “New Abia” vision, highlighting improvements in sanitation, public service delivery, and economic activities across the state.
Addressing workers’ welfare, Otti disclosed that his administration has cleared substantial salary arrears inherited from previous governments and earmarked over ₦10 billion in the 2026 budget for the phased payment of gratuities accumulated over two decades.
“We understand the damage done when workers are owed, which is why we have remained consistent in meeting our obligations,” he said.
He further outlined ongoing investments in capacity development, modern work tools, and improved office infrastructure, noting that restoring meritocracy in the civil service has created opportunities for skilled professionals to thrive.
On broader economic prospects, Otti said improved infrastructure, enhanced security, and investor confidence are driving job creation and positioning Abia as an emerging hub for business and innovation.
While acknowledging existing challenges, the governor assured workers of continued dialogue, transparency, and responsiveness to their concerns.
He also commended labour unions, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), for their cooperation, pledging to address their demands in line with available resources.
Earlier, the State Controller of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr. Okpara Helen, represented by Mr. Uduneje Chikaodi, raised concerns over rising insecurity and poverty, describing them as major threats to decent work in Nigeria.
Speaking on the theme, “Insecurity and Poverty – The Enemy of Decent Work,” labour leaders stressed the need for fair wages, social protection, improved healthcare, and stronger measures to safeguard lives and livelihoods.
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Kingsley Chibueze Nwokocha, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening industrial harmony and improving working conditions.
Also speaking, Chairman of the occasion and Member representing Isialangwa North Constituency, Hon. Ginger Onwusibe, urged workers to uphold discipline and professionalism, noting that strong work ethics would enhance their capacity to demand accountability.
The Abia State Chairman of the NLC, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, commended the administration’s strides, including the implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage, recruitment of over 10,000 teachers, and rehabilitation of more than 250 Primary Health Care Centres.
He, however, presented outstanding demands requiring urgent government attention, stressing the need for sustained engagement.
The event featured a colourful march past by workers from various unions, with the Deputy Governor taking the salute, and drew a large turnout of workers, union leaders, and government officials.
