Abia State Government has taken a bold step towards transforming its transportation sector with the rollout of operations at its newly constructed mega transport terminal, designed to serve as a one-stop hub for commuters and operators across the state and beyond.

The Honourable Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, disclosed this during a crucial stakeholders’ engagement with transport operators, noting that the meeting was part of ongoing efforts to align all players with the State Government’s vision for a modern, efficient, and coordinated transport system.“You know, the essence of this meeting is for us to collaborate with the transport operators,” the Commissioner stated. “We have been having a series of engagements with them to ensure they fall in line with exactly what we are doing. Today’s meeting is also to clearly communicate the timeline for their relocation and full operations at this terminal.”

Dr. Ukaegbu described the facility as a landmark achievement for Abia State, emphasizing its strategic importance in redefining transport services.“The siting of this gigantic project is one of the biggest things that has happened to Abia State. This place is going to be a one-stop transport hub where, wherever you want to travel to, you just come here and access every mode of transportation. We are introducing a centralized parking system, and the facility is fully furnished,” he added.

He assured stakeholders of fairness and inclusivity in the transition process, stressing that government remains committed to ensuring that all operators benefit from the new system. “We are very sure that there will be fair dealings and that everybody will be happy at the end of the day. Our goal is to provide the best services for the people,” he said.

Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transportation, Associate Professor Obioma Nwogbe, explained that the engagement marked the final phase of consultations before full commencement of operations.“The reason for this meeting is to have the final stakeholders’ engagement with transport unions, formal and informal operators, to harmonize and synergize on how the activities of this mega terminal will be kicked off,” he said.

According to Dr. Nwogbe, operations at the terminal are expected to commence imminently.“By His Grace, movement into this terminal will begin on or before next week or within the next two weeks. The engagement has been very successful, with fruitful deliberations.”

Prof. Nwogbe further revealed that transport operators have expressed strong satisfaction with the project, describing it as unmatched in the region.“They are very happy with the handiwork of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti. In fact, they have extended their appreciation to him, noting that this edifice is one of its kind in the entire Southeast. There is no facility like this. It will provide them with a comfortable environment to operate, unlike their current locations,” she noted.

He added that the terminal is designed to deliver enhanced comfort, safety, and efficiency for passengers, urging users to take ownership of the facility by maintaining cleanliness and adhering to operational guidelines.“This place will be operated like an airport, with structured processes and clear information systems. Passengers should make use of the information center, follow instructions, and maintain hygiene. We have provided adequate conveniences, including restrooms and waste disposal systems.Everyone must keep the environment clean and comply with health, safety, and environmental standards,” he advised. The new mega transport terminal is expected to significantly ease travel, improve urban mobility, and position Abia State as a leader in modern transport infrastructure in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
