Ohanaeze Unveils Igbo Charter With Governor Alex Otti Advocating Digital Transformation For Ndigbo
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has unveiled the Igbo Charter for Strategic Engagement and National Development. It’s leadership has also called for greater unity, economic transformation, stronger diaspora engagement and coordinated action towards the development of Ala Igbo.
The Charter was unveiled at the Igbo Day Lecture and Dinner held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, as part of activities marking the 2026 Igbo Day celebration hosted by Abia State.

Delivering the keynote address virtually, Chairman of the Igbo Charter Committee, Prof. Kingsley Moghalu, said the Charter should remain above partisan politics and serve as a non-partisan roadmap for development, anchored on merit, accountability and measurable targets.
He identified promotion of the Igbo language, development of a digital marketplace, stronger diaspora engagement, improved security and investment, and a shift from dependence on remittances to productive investments as key priorities.
Prof. Moghalu also advocated true federalism, equitable citizenship and devolution of powers, urging Ndigbo to move from dialogue to practical implementation of the Charter. He described Governor Alex Otti as “one of our best.”
In his welcome address, the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, said the Charter was developed to harness the collective strength of Ndigbo and provide a structured framework for engaging the Nigerian State and the international community.
He said the document, prepared by Igbo technocrats and business leaders, also seeks to preserve Igbo culture and identity, particularly the language, proposing that Igbo be made compulsory in primary and secondary schools across Igboland.
Senator Mbata further called on the Federal Government to pursue a political solution to the case of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Speaking at the event, Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, said the State was deliberately moving beyond conventional trading towards manufacturing and technology-driven commerce.
The Governor said the future of global business was increasingly centred on technology and digital delivery, adding that Abia entrepreneurs must position themselves to compete in the global marketplace.
“We are leaving that place of trading. In Abia, we have markets; the markets are important. But we are moving from the market to manufacturing.
So, this Government is supporting manufacturing. We are driving digital delivery,” Otti said.
He said the State’s investment in digital skills through the TechRise initiative was already yielding results, noting that some beneficiaries were working remotely for global technology companies from Aba.
Governor Otti described the theme of the celebration, “Njikọ Ka,” as apt, saying it underscored the importance of unity among Ndigbo, and assured the Ohanaeze leadership of his administration’s continued support.
He said his administration had laid a solid foundation for Abia’s transformation, adding that “the only way to go is up” once the foundation had been established.
The Chairman of the occasion, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, urged Ndigbo to work together to develop Ala Igbo, stressing the need to move beyond complaints and take greater responsibility for their collective future.
The event featured a panel discussion moderated by Chief Enyinnaya Onukalu and was attended by the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, FNSE, members of the National Assembly, traditional rulers, clergy, professionals and Ndigbo from across the country and beyond.
Ohanaeze Had Earlier Announced Programme
At a press conference held at Government House, Umuahia, the Global Policy Secretary of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Dr. Ezechi Chukwu, had announced the programme for the 2026 Igbo Day celebration, scheduled for September 28 and 29 2026.
Speaking on behalf of Senator John Azuta-Mbata and the Global Executive Council, Dr. Chukwu said the theme, “Njiko Ka” — “Togetherness is Best,” was intended to reinforce the need for unity and collective purpose among Ndigbo.
He disclosed that the programme would feature the Charter lecture by Prof. Moghalu, a panel representing the seven core Ohanaeze states — the five South-East states, Rivers and Delta — as well as virtual participation by diaspora chapters.
The main celebration was scheduled to include a wreath-laying ceremony, interdenominational service, the President-General’s state-of-the-union address, a traditional Igbo Day march-past, goodwill messages and cultural presentations.
Dr. Chukwu said the celebration would also draw lessons from previous themes, including “Akọ bụ Ije” and “Onyeaghala Nwanneya,” adopted for the 2024 and 2025 Igbo Day celebrations respectively.
The Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, His Excellency Emeka Ihedioha Sibeudu, said the celebration would enable Ndigbo to reaffirm their identity, reflect on their journey and explore constructive ways of engaging government for national development.

Also speaking, Abia State Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed that the programme included a facility tour of selected Abia State Government projects for Ohanaeze leaders and journalists.
He assured the organisation of the Abia State Government’s commitment to hosting the two-day celebration and thanked the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo for choosing Abia as the venue.

Abia Records Healthcare Breakthrough As 19-Year-Old Accident Victim Undergoes Successful Brain Surgery

The Abia State Government has recorded a major breakthrough in healthcare with the successful performance of an emergency brain surgery on a 19-year-old accident victim at the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, highlighting the growing capacity of the State’s health institutions to provide advanced and specialised medical care.
The Commissioner for Information disclosed this at a press briefing following the Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, at the Government House, Umuahia.
The 19-year-old, who was involved in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, October 4, 2026, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Medical investigations revealed a massive collection of blood within his skull, placing severe pressure on the brain and requiring immediate neurosurgical intervention.
The emergency operation lasted about four hours, during which more than 100 millilitres of blood clot was evacuated from the patient’s brain and the bleeding controlled. He was subsequently transferred to the Intensive Care Unit for post-operative care and has commenced recovery, including movement of his limbs.

The successful intervention is significant because the availability of appropriate facilities, equipment and specialist personnel enabled the surgery to be performed immediately in Abia, eliminating the potentially fatal delay that could have arisen from referring the patient to another State.
The development is part of the sustained investment by the Otti administration in repositioning the State’s healthcare system over the past three years. Health institutions are being equipped to handle increasingly complex procedures, while specialist personnel are being engaged to strengthen the system’s capacity.

The Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre has also recorded other successful specialised procedures performed by Nigerian specialists. Meanwhile, increasing healthcare investment is attracting support from development partners and international organisations.
A Swedish organisation has facilitated the provision of specialised medical equipment for trauma-related procedures, including orthopaedic, brain and spine surgeries. These interventions are contributing to the development of competency centres capable of providing specialised healthcare within Abia.

In another major healthcare development, the State Government has approved ₦502.1 million as counterpart funding under the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund, a payment critical to accessing the Federal Government’s allocation under the programme and sustaining healthcare services for vulnerable citizens, particularly pregnant women and children below five years enrolled under the health insurance scheme for vulnerable persons.
The State has also commenced activities for the 2026 World Sight Day, which runs until October 15, with emphasis on eye health, good vision and prevention of avoidable blindness.
The campaign is linking good vision with road safety, particularly among commercial drivers. Free eye screening is being provided at various locations across the State, with the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau collaborating with the Ministry of Transport, the Federal Road Safety Corps and transport unions. A vision corridor will also be unveiled at the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal to make eye assessment more accessible to drivers and encourage regular checks.
Government is equally providing health interventions in communities affected by the recent flooding to reduce health hazards and prevent possible disease outbreaks. During the period under review, no cases were recorded of diseases of public health importance, including Lassa fever, Ebola, diphtheria and COVID-19.
On housing, the application process for houses at Pocket Layout has been oversubscribed, indicating strong interest from Abians and residents. Analysis of the Expression of Interest forms is ongoing as the relevant authorities process the submissions.
The government has also conducted a Needs Assessment of the World Bank Estates in Aba and Umuahia and the IBB Layout in Umuahia. Preliminary interventions are already being undertaken in critical areas, particularly road infrastructure and solar street lighting, alongside other measures addressing needs identified during the assessment.
However, the government has revoked the building permit for TradeMore Housing Estate, Ubani, Umuahia, following the discovery of serious planning and regulatory infractions.
The Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) conducted an inspection following complaints from residents about flooding and defective structures and found that the developer’s original application was for only two structures — a semi-detached two-bedroom bungalow and a three-bedroom bungalow — despite the subsequent development of an entire estate.
The application was also found deficient in critical planning requirements, including survey and site plans, site analysis, layout plan, environmental impact assessment, evidence of administrative fee payments and technical inputs from relevant professionals and government agencies.
The building permit has therefore been revoked, with further steps to address the issues to be communicated.
The UCDA further clarified that although approval for development of the property was granted in March 2015, the developer approached the authority in 2024 seeking approval to build a market on the site. The proposal was rejected because it was inconsistent with the approved agricultural use of the land.
A subsequent inspection found ongoing construction, prompting the authority to issue a stop-work order. Officials attempting to enforce the order were reportedly attacked and rescued through the intervention of Operation Crush. The property has since been sealed and the permits revoked.
Government, however, remains concerned about individuals who may have purchased property within the estate and is working towards resolving the situation, with further communication to follow.
On the persistent flooding in parts of Umuahia, Governor Otti has directed the establishment of an inter-ministerial committee comprising the UCDA and the Ministries of Works, Environment and Lands.
The committee has two weeks to submit a comprehensive report and lasting solution to the perennial flooding affecting Ogurube and Ehimiri layouts.
The administration is seeking a coordinated and sustainable solution to recurring flooding and erosion rather than temporary interventions.

Significant progress has also been recorded on the Emede-Ibeku flood and erosion control project. Clearing of erosion sites is 100 per cent complete, lateral filling is about 90 per cent complete, excavation for drainage approximately 95 per cent complete, while concreting of drainage structures has reached about 90 per cent.
Government expressed optimism that residents of affected communities would soon begin to benefit from the intervention.
The State Government has also issued its Week 40 public health advisory, with specific recommendations for communities affected by flooding. Residents in flood-prone areas have been urged to observe appropriate health and safety measures as government continues efforts to mitigate the impact of flooding and prevent disease outbreaks.
In the area of social protection, the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has received nine additional Abia indigenes returning from the Republic of South Africa within the past two weeks.
The returnees comprise one adult male, three mothers, four children and one infant, all of whom have been successfully reunited with their families.
The State Government is also preparing to facilitate the return of approximately 100 additional Abia indigenes from South Africa in the coming weeks, with documentation and other arrangements already underway.
The developments reflect the broad approach of the Alex Otti administration to governance, combining investment in specialised healthcare with housing development, infrastructure renewal, flood and erosion control, social protection and enforcement of planning standards.
The growing interest in the Pocket Layout Estate, ongoing interventions in existing residential estates and the expansion of specialised healthcare services further underscore the administration’s stated commitment to improving living conditions and strengthening public institutions.
The emerging New Abia agenda, therefore, extends beyond physical infrastructure to include expanded access to quality healthcare, properly planned residential communities, protection of lives and property, stronger regulatory institutions and responsive government.

Otti Commissions Additional 20 Electric Buses, Orders Daily Traffic Enforcement Till 10pm
Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex C. Otti, OFR, has commissioned another set of 20 electric buses for the Abia Green Shuttle Services, declaring that his administration will continue to modernise public transportation while making commuting safer, more affordable and environmentally friendly.
The buses were commissioned on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal, Umuahia.
Otti said the new buses would improve service delivery and expand the Green Shuttle’s operations to more destinations within and outside Abia. He also disclosed that buses with larger cargo capacity would be added, while automated access facilities for persons living with disabilities had been provided.

The Governor recalled that the first 20 electric buses were commissioned in December 2025 by the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and said the latest addition demonstrated his administration’s commitment to keeping its promises.
He said the choice of electric buses was driven by the need for cost-effective transportation, environmental protection and alignment with emerging global technology.
According to Otti, the public transport system has changed significantly in the last seven months, with the commissioning of the Nnenna Otti Bus Terminal, introduction of technology-driven payment systems, orderly queues and improved service reliability.
“The regular, everyday people are as deserving of dignity as everyone else,” the Governor said.

Otti Orders Traffic Enforcement Till 10pm
Otti directed the Abia State Road Traffic and Safety Management Agency (ARTSMA) and the Harmonised Taskforce to extend their operational hours to 10pm daily, including weekends, deploy more personnel and resources along major routes, and strictly enforce traffic regulations.
He warned that beating traffic lights, driving against traffic, overloading, irregular parking and other reckless acts would attract severe sanctions.
“Nobody has any right to endanger the lives and property of others through acts of recklessness, impatience or poor judgment,” he warned.
The Governor also ordered thorough investigation of suspected sabotage, vandalism and other criminal activities involving transport assets, directing that anyone found culpable should face the law.
He charged the Inter-Agency Transport team to ensure proper management of the buses, terminal and shelters, as well as staff welfare.
Otti urged residents to take their tax obligations seriously, stressing that timely payment of taxes would enable government to sustain its development programmes.
“We shall not be mere passengers in the vehicle of progress because we have the advantage to steer the wheels,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to building a modern transport system and a prosperous New Abia.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, described the event as a celebration of visionary leadership. He said the 20 new buses would expand intra-city and inter-city operations and promote cleaner air through zero-emission transport.

Abia Government Cracks Down on Okada Operations in Major Cities, Violators Risk Arrest and Confiscation
The Abia State Government has announced a sweeping ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as Okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, in a decisive move aimed at strengthening security, improving public safety, and enhancing urban transportation management.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, who disclosed that Governor Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has approved the prohibition as part of the administration’s broader efforts to create safer and more organized urban centres across the state.
According to the government, the ban took effect from, today, Monday, June 22, 2026, and all commercial motorcycle operators are required to immediately cease operations within the designated metropolitan areas.
The government explained that the policy is designed to address growing security concerns, reduce criminal activities often associated with the use of motorcycles in urban centres, improve traffic flow, and promote a more efficient and regulated transportation system.
To ensure full compliance, security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been directed to strictly enforce the directive. The government warned that any individual or operator found violating the ban would be arrested, while the motorcycle involved would be confiscated in accordance with the law.
“The Government calls on residents, transport operators, community leaders, and members of the public to cooperate fully with the authorities in the implementation of this directive, which is aimed at advancing the collective safety and development of the State,” the statement noted.
The administration further urged all affected operators and stakeholders to take immediate note of the directive and comply accordingly to avoid sanctions.
The ban marks another major policy intervention by the Otti administration in its ongoing efforts to improve security, orderliness, and the overall quality of life in Abia’s urban centres.
