Abia State Governor, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has lauded the immense contributions of the Obi of Onitsha, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, to Igboland, Nigeria, Africa and the global community, describing the revered monarch as a symbol of wisdom, integrity, service and exemplary leadership.
Governor Otti made the commendation during the grand celebration of the monarch’s 85th birthday, organised by the Abia State Government at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, where he also stressed the urgent need for national unity and cautioned against divisive politics driven by ethnic and religious sentiments.


The Governor described the Obi of Onitsha as a selfless leader, a gentleman of uncommon grace and a royal father whose enduring legacy continues to inspire generations across Nigeria and beyond.
According to Governor Otti, the celebration was not merely to honour age but to celebrate a life of remarkable impact and to send a strong message to younger generations that diligence, honour and hard work remain pathways to greatness.
“So, we are all one and the same. You know, when misguided politicians want to divide us, they begin to remind us that you are from here, the other person is from there.
“We want our young people to know that it pays to be diligent. Honour pays,” Governor Otti stated.
The Governor further expressed profound appreciation for the monarch’s far-reaching contributions to society, noting that Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe has consistently provided purposeful leadership that transcends traditional boundaries, positively influencing governance, peacebuilding, cultural preservation and humanity.


Praying for God’s continued blessings upon the royal father, Governor Otti asked for greater strength, sound health and divine wisdom for him to sustain his service to humanity.
He further described the Obi of Onitsha as a mentor, father figure and trusted adviser, revealing that he frequently consults the monarch before making major decisions.
Governor Otti thanked God for preserving the traditional ruler in good health to witness his 85th birthday and prayed for long life and renewed grace upon him.
Speaking further, Governor Otti disclosed that his administration is rebuilding the historic Ojukwu Bunker as part of deliberate efforts to preserve Abia’s heritage and historical identity.
He maintained that despite the political season, his administration remains resolute in delivering good governance, economic transformation and people-oriented policies for Ndi Abia.


“Yes, this is a political period. But, we are not bothered. We just do the right thing and keep doing the work we are doing for our people. We will not be distracted,” the Governor affirmed.
Governor Otti noted that for years, Abians faced stigma and discrimination outside the State, but said his administration has restored dignity and confidence through infrastructural renewal, inclusiveness and economic reforms.
In their remarks, the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, described the occasion as an opportunity to celebrate a legend, noting that Governor Otti has consistently demonstrated appreciation for excellence and individuals who have made meaningful contributions to society.
They praised Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe for bringing dignity, prestige and class to the traditional institution while commending Governor Otti for honouring the foremost royal father.


Former Minister of Education, Dr. Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, in her goodwill message, saluted the Obi of Onitsha, describing him as an institution whose life reflects professionalism, excellence and exceptional leadership.
She also commended Governor Otti for hosting the celebration, describing the event as a strong statement that the monarch is deserving of honour and recognition.
Dr. Ezekwesili further urged Ndi Abia not to take Governor Otti’s leadership for granted but to continue supporting his administration in sustaining the transformational agenda of the State.
Also delivering goodwill messages, the Chairman of the Southeast Traditional Rulers Council, Eze Dr. E.C. Okeke, representative of the Igwe-in-Council, Chief Dr. Okey Mike Areh, and the Archbishop of Methodist Church Nigeria, Umuahia Archdiocese, Most Rev. Chibuzor Opoko, congratulated the Obi of Onitsha on his 85th birthday, describing the Umuahia celebration as unique and reflective of his broad acceptance across regions.
They equally appreciated Governor Alex Otti and the Abia State Government for choosing to celebrate the royal father during his lifetime and prayed for divine blessings upon the Governor.


Responding, the celebrant, His Royal Majesty Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, reflected on his 85-year journey and recounted his longstanding relationship with Governor Otti dating back to their time at Diamond Bank, where he served as Chairman and Governor Otti as Chief Executive Officer.
The monarch described Governor Otti as an intelligent, hardworking and visionary leader, thanking him for fulfilling his promise to celebrate him.
He urged Abians to continue supporting the Governor to enable him consolidate on his transformation agenda, expressing confidence that Abia State is on the path to greater development.


According to the monarch, the achievements recorded within the short period of Governor Otti’s administration are only the beginning of greater accomplishments ahead.


The colourful event featured a cake-cutting ceremony, photo sessions and attracted an array of dignitaries, including political leaders, traditional rulers, clergy and prominent personalities from across Igboland and beyond.
