Published

on

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti has received a delegation from the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Nigeria led by the Deputy Consul-General, Mr. Peter Keulers .
They were in the State on a scoping mission alongside the Kaltani Company led by its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Obi Charles Nnanna, who are due to commence the project of turning waste into wealth in the State after the execution of an MoU with Abia State Government.

Governor Otti informed the delegation that Abia is ready and open for business. He further disclosed that Abia is not seeking for aid but exploring areas of collaboration for mutual benefits.

The State Chief Executive noted that when he assumed office as the Governor of the State in 2023, the State was classified as the dirtiest State in Nigeria, hence, his decision to declare a state of emergency in waste management and environmental sanitation.

He said that a whole lot has been achieved and Abia is currently rated as one of the neatest States and now the government is moving to the next level of converting waste to wealth.

“What we have done is to evacuate the rubbish and put them somewhere. We are now moving to the next stage which is the stage of, what do we do with those heaps of rubbish and that is why Kaltani Company came in to say, and there are two ways to deal with it.

“We thought that the better thing to do will be to convert the waste into  products that people will buy.

“What will this products be, there are a lot of them and people talk about waste to wealth or waste to energy and that is in very serious demand here and that is where he (The Honourable Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities) comes in because it is part of our strategy.

“We need to solve the energy problem in Abia. I’ll say that we are almost there, and it is in the same Aba that we are talking about, that has power from an independent integrated power company that runs on a 24 hour basis.

The State Chief Executive stressed the high demand of electric power to the entrepreneurial Abians and residents said that his government would support them.

“The demand for energy is inelastic and you know how it is for people who are entrepreneurs, people who have capacity to produce anything, so these people require support from government.

” For us, we believe that if we are able to provide enough power for our people, we would have solved half of the problems,” Gov. Otti stated.

In a brief remark, the Commissioner for Power and public Utilities, Engr. Ikechukwu Monday noted that having tackled the issues of sanitation head-long, Governor Otti is concentrating on converting waste to wealth which would also lead to environmental sustainability and job creation.

While also informing the delegation of the immense potential that Abia boasts of, Engr. Monday urged the delegation to consider investing in the area of converting waste to energy, adding that Abia is one of 5 States selected for the circular economy project being financed by the European Union.

In his speech, the Deputy Consul-General, Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mr. Peter Keulers said that his delegation is on a scoping mission to meet with government, private sector and academic/research organizations to discuss possible areas of deployment of Dutch Technology and knowledge to meet both commercial and policy objectives in the areas of waste management, circular aspect of Agriculture among others.

The Deputy Consul-General while noting that circular economy is so dear to the Kingdom of Netherlands, said that, it will lead to a more sustainable and resilient economy with less pollution and waste, and even lead to a more efficient use of scarce resources as well as engender quality of life.

He informed the Governor that Circular economy has the potential of creating all kinds of economic opportunities and jobs in the future, pointing out that they are focused on promoting bilateral relations, having visited the proposed site for the Kaltani waste management facility in the State

Earlier, the Managing Director cum Chief Executive Officer of the Kaltani Company and key development partner of the waste to wealth project, Engr. Obi Charles Nnanna said that they are a ready partner in the project of waste collection and recycling.

He expressed his joy for the opportunity to collaborate with Governor Alex Otti in realizing his vision for the State.

“His Excellency, Governor Alex Otti is a man of vision, a man that wants to create a lasting impact in the lives of Abians and we are happy to be part of that story, we are happy to support His Excellency’s government and vision.

“We intend to galvanize waste, we intend to create job, we intend to address multiple United Nations SDGs,” Nnanna stated.

Governor Alex Otti has attributed Abia State’s emergence as Nigeria’s third most improved state in the 2026 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index to his administration’s strategic investments in healthcare, education, infrastructure.
Also his governance and the growing collaboration with the Federal Government, including the recent visit of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Speaking during the July edition of his monthly media chat at the Government House, Umuahia, Governor Otti described the latest ranking as a clear validation of his administration’s reforms.

The Governor said the progress reflects the positive impact of government policies on the lives of Abians.
The first Abia citizen noted that Abia has made one of the most remarkable improvements in the country’s performance ranking, rising from 36th position in 2024 to 10th in 2025, and now 3rd in the 2026 Phillips Consulting State Performance Index, behind only Enugu and Jigawa States.

Governor Otti said the state’s transformation has been driven by sustained investments in critical sectors, particularly healthcare, education, infrastructure, land administration and economic development.

Highlighting achievements in the health sector, he disclosed that Abia recorded one of Nigeria’s best performances in reducing maternal and infant mortality in the first quarter of 2026, while enrolment into the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme continues to increase.

According to him, 144 of the state’s 200 Primary Healthcare Centres have been fully functionalised, while 77 additional health facilities renovated through the World Bank intervention have also been completed, with about 30 more centres expected to become operational soon.

On transportation and infrastructure, Governor Otti announced that the state has received 20 additional electric buses, which would operate on routes including Umuahia–Bende–Arochukwu, Umuahia–Uturu (ABSU), Umuahia–Umudike–Ikwuano, Aba–Owerri and Aba–Ukwa. He added that surveillance systems have been installed in the buses to ensure accountability and improve service delivery.

In the area of land administration, Governor Otti said the government has issued 4,923 Certificates of Occupancy within three years, with nearly 1,000 processed this year alone, adding that the completion of the state’s digital mapping project in partnership with UN-Habitat would usher in a fully digitised land administration system that would eliminate fraudulent land transactions and speed up property documentation.

On education, he said the administration’s Smart School initiative is gathering momentum with two Smart Schools already commissioned out of the planned twenty, assuring that the remaining eighteen schools would be completed soon.
“The idea is to expose our children to modern technology from an early stage,” the Governor stated.
Addressing ongoing infrastructure projects, Governor Otti acknowledged that the rainy season has slowed the pace of road construction but assured residents that work continues across major project sites. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ending flooding through the construction of durable drainage infrastructure.

Responding to concerns over rising rents in Umuahia and Aba, the Governor attributed the increase to growing demand for accommodation and announced that the government would soon commence the Pocket Layout Housing Project in Umuahia to bridge the housing deficit.
Governor Otti described the recent visit of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, as a major boost to Abia’s creative economy.
