Years Of Neglect Give Way To Hope As Abia Governor Commissions Ultra-Modern Umuahia Central Bus Terminal 

In what many residents described as a powerful reflection of the long-awaited aspirations of Abians after years of neglect, poor infrastructure, and broken promises by previous administrations, the Governor of Abia State, His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, has officially commissioned the newly built Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, a landmark project expected to redefine transportation and urban development in the State capital.

The commissioning ceremony, held amidst pomp and celebration , marked yet another milestone in the ongoing transformation of Abia State under the administration of Governor Otti, with citizens hailing the project as evidence that governance can truly respond to the needs and yearnings of the people.
In a symbolic move that resonated deeply with many Nigerians, Governor Otti named the ultra-modern facility the Prof. Nnenna Oti Central Bus Terminal.

This is honouring the former Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), for her courage, integrity, and steadfastness during the 2023 governorship election in Abia State.
Describing the project as a bold symbol of the “New Abia”, Governor Otti declared that the State had finally moved beyond mediocrity and abandoned the era of “playing small” in infrastructure development.

According to him, the world-class transport terminal represents not just a physical structure but a clear demonstration of responsible governance, visionary leadership, and a government determined to restore dignity to public infrastructure.
“The days of playing small are over in Abia State. What we are building is a modern transport ecosystem that supports commerce, mobility, safety, and economic prosperity for our people,” Governor Otti declared.
For many residents who had endured years of chaotic motor parks, poor urban planning, traffic congestion, and infrastructural decay, the commissioning of the terminal represents the fulfilment of a long-held dream and a visible departure from the pains and disappointments associated with previous administrations.

Governor Otti noted that the terminal, which has the capacity to accommodate over 340 buses at a time, forms part of his administration’s broader transportation reform agenda aimed at building an organised, safe, efficient, and investor-friendly transport system across Abia State.
He explained that after delivering hundreds of kilometres of roads across the State, his administration had expanded efforts toward building modern transport infrastructure, including bus terminals, bus shelters, traffic management systems, and electric buses.
The Governor further disclosed that the State currently operates 20 electric buses on both intra-city and inter-city routes, while another 20 electric buses and 30 additional buses under construction would soon be deployed to improve mobility and reduce transportation stress for residents.
He assured Abians that similar transportation projects are ongoing in Aba, including the construction of another modern bus terminal, bus shelters, and major junction upgrades aimed at improving commuter experience and easing traffic congestion.

Governor Otti stated that the terminal was intentionally designed to reflect global standards, with strong emphasis on accessibility, environmental sustainability, commuter comfort, and provisions for persons living with disabilities.
Explaining the decision to immortalise Professor Nnenna Oti, the Governor described her as a woman who stood courageously for truth at a defining moment in Abia’s political history.
“Professor Nnenna Oti stood firmly on the side of truth at a critical moment in our State’s history. By doing the right thing despite enormous pressure, she restored public confidence in the electoral process and became a symbol of integrity for future generations,” Governor Otti stated.
He urged residents and community leaders to continue supporting the government through prompt payment of taxes, stressing that taxation remains essential for sustaining development and funding critical infrastructure projects across the State.

The Governor also paid glowing tribute to the late Commissioner for Transport, Comrade Sunny Onwuma, whom he credited for initiating the process that birthed the bus terminal, describing his death as painful and unfortunate. A minute silence was observed in his honour.
Speaking earlier, the Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Nmeregini, praised Governor Otti for what he described as intentional, transparent, and people-oriented governance.
He stated that members of the State Assembly were proud of the infrastructural transformation currently taking place in Umuahia and across the State, noting that Governor Otti had restored dignity and public confidence in governance through faithful execution of projects.
In his address, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, described the terminal as a major milestone in Abia’s transformation journey, saying the facility goes beyond transportation to symbolise modernisation, urban renewal, orderliness, economic growth, and safer public transportation.

According to him, the terminal would significantly improve traffic management, reduce congestion, enhance passenger safety and comfort, create jobs, and increase the State’s internally generated revenue.
Also speaking, Professor Nnenna Oti expressed gratitude to Governor Otti for the honour bestowed upon her and reaffirmed the importance of truth, accountability, and ethical leadership in public service.
She recalled standing firmly on the side of truth during the 2023 governorship election and expressed hope for a Nigeria where honesty, justice, and integrity would always prevail.
In his remarks on behalf of the project developers, the Managing Director of Planet Projects, Mr. Biodium Otunola, described the facility as the best transport terminal his company has ever constructed in Nigeria, revealing that Governor Otti insisted on world-class standards and repeatedly delayed commissioning until every component met the required quality.

He disclosed that the terminal boasts over 62 air conditioners, more than 30 public conveniences, 22 shops, commercial centres, a restaurant, and a motel, all carefully designed to guarantee comfort and convenience for commuters and visitors.
Otunola further explained that the project forms part of a wider transportation reform initiative that has already delivered traffic lights, bus stations, road signs, and street lighting across Umuahia.

Earlier, the Principal Secretary to the Governor and Chief Strategy Officer to the Government took guests through the project journey, commending Governor Otti and the implementation team for their dedication in delivering what he described as a world-class transport facility.
The colourful event attracted the presence of the wife of the Governor, Her Excellency Mrs. Priscilla Otti, Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, members of the National and State Assemblies, top government officials, traditional rulers, clerics, transport union members, and a mammoth crowd of excited residents.
For many Abians, the commissioning of the Prof. Nnenna Oti Central Bus Terminal stands not just as another government project, but as a powerful symbol of renewed hope , a clear signal that after years of neglect and hardship, governance in Abia is finally beginning to reflect the heart desires of the people.
