The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, AIG Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, has urged journalists to uphold professional standards, verify information and prioritise personal safety ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Similarly, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, Dr Chimezie Godswill Okwuonu, has called on governments at all levels to invest in medical research, particularly kidney-related diseases, to address their increasing occurrence in society.

The two made the call during the second day of the 2026 Press Week and Abia 2027 Election Media Retreat organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abia State Council, at Bishop Nwedo Pastoral Centre, Umuahia.

The retreat, with the theme, “The Future of Journalism in an Era of Disinformation: Preparing Abia Media Practitioners for Democracy and the 2027 Polls,” is designed to prepare journalists for accurate, balanced and responsible coverage of the forthcoming elections.

Speaking at the event, AIG Afolabi disclosed that the Abia Police Command had strengthened its operational capacity through specialised training in cybercrime investigation, intelligence gathering, crime analysis, firearms handling and tactical operations.

He said the initiatives were aimed at improving the capacity of officers to tackle internet fraud, online impersonation and other emerging security threats.

The Commissioner also highlighted the command’s community safety partnerships and inter-agency collaboration, stressing that security could not be achieved by the police alone.

He urged journalists to verify security-related information before publication, avoid spreading unconfirmed reports, protect sensitive operational information and exercise caution when covering political rallies and volatile situations.

Afolabi also advised media practitioners to strengthen their digital security against online impersonation, suspicious links and hacking attempts.

Narrating his personal experience with cybercriminals, he disclosed that fraudsters once impersonated him online using the identity and photograph of a political officeholder, causing confusion and damaging his reputation.

He said the experience reinforced the need for vigilance, adding that the command had organised intensive training for its Cybercrime Unit to improve its capacity to investigate cyber-related offences.

The Police Commissioner assured residents that the command remained committed to protecting lives and property, while urging journalists to maintain professional neutrality and promote peace and stability during the forthcoming elections.

In his presentation, Dr Okwuonu called for increased government funding of research into kidney-related diseases and remedies, noting that the growing occurrence of such life-threatening conditions required urgent attention.

He maintained that Abia State needed at least two well-equipped research laboratories to support medical investigations and develop effective responses to kidney-related diseases.

The CMD also advised journalists to prioritise their physical and mental health, noting that the demands of journalism often exposed practitioners to stress, irregular meals, inadequate sleep and emotional exhaustion.

He introduced the “FIT TO REPORT” health guide, urging journalists to eat regularly, stay hydrated, recognise early signs of stress, get adequate rest and undergo regular medical check-ups.

He further encouraged media practitioners to monitor their blood pressure and blood sugar levels, take prescribed medications, exercise regularly and organise their workloads to avoid unnecessary stress.

Okwuonu cautioned journalists against treating exhaustion and persistent health challenges as normal aspects of their profession, stressing that good health was essential for effective reporting.

The three-day Press Week and Election Media Retreat, which commenced on Wednesday, November 4, is scheduled to climax on Friday, November 6, with a grand finale at Bishop Nwedo Pastoral Centre, Umuahia.

Governor Alex Otti To 100 THRIVEABIA Pioneer Graduates : Use Your Knowledge To Create Jobs, Mentor Others, Build Abia

Published

on

Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, has charged the 100 pioneer graduates of the ThriveAbia initiative to deploy the knowledge and skills acquired during the programme to create opportunities, mentor other young people and drive the economic transformation of the state.

Governor Otti gave the charge at the graduation ceremony of the maiden Cohort of ThriveAbia, held at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia.

The Governor, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Emmanuel Meribeole, described the graduates as innovators, entrepreneurs, problem-solvers and ambassadors of a new Abia. He said the programme is a testament to his administration’s commitment to investing in human capital as the foundation for sustainable development.

“The knowledge you have acquired must not end with you. Each of you must become a multiplier of opportunities,” Governor Otti stated.

“Imagine if each of you trains or mentors just 10 other young people, that would mean 1,000 additional young people empowered through this maiden cohort alone. And if this 1,000 empower others, the possibility becomes enormous. I’m therefore challenging you to return to your communities, share your knowledge, mentor others and develop solutions to the challenges around you. Let the impact of this programme be felt across all the 17 local government areas of Abia State.”

The Governor emphasized that his administration views investment in human capital not as expenditure, but as investment in Abia’s future prosperity. While respecting the right of Abians to pursue opportunities globally, he said his vision is to make Abia a place where young people can thrive.

“Today, a software engineer in Umuahia can work for a company in London or the US. A graphic designer in Aba can serve clients in New York. A digital entrepreneur in Ohafia can provide solutions across Africa. Technology has made the world a global village, a global marketplace and Abia must take its rightful place in that marketplace. My message is simple: Stay, build, innovate and thrive,” he said, noting that infrastructure, education and economic reforms are interconnected pillars of his vision for a competitive and prosperous Abia.

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Science, Technology and Innovation, Dr. David Kalu, said ThriveAbia was deliberately designed to go beyond conventional training by embedding mentorship to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and professional workplace skills.

“Our objective was not simply to produce trainees. Our objective was to produce talent,” Dr. Kalu said, adding that the focus on measurable outcomes is the hallmark of the programme.

He disclosed that the Ministry created pathways linking training to practical work experience through a pilot internship programme with a global cybersecurity and technology company operating across emerging tech fields, involving CV collection, candidate screening, interview follow-ups and placement tracking.

He reminded the graduates that ThriveAbia operates on a train-the-trainer model, urging them to become multipliers who will mentor subsequent cohorts.

Also speaking, one of the implementation partners and Co-founder of Tech Excentric and Curate, Mr. Gilbert Igwe, said the essence of the programme is to empower youths in tech to earn and to train others. He expressed delight that over 50% of the graduates are already earning in dollars, employed and training others, proving that government partnership with the right private sector yields results.

Some of the graduates in their testimonies, thanked Governor Otti for the opportunity, noting that they can now deploy multiple technological tools to improve their work and have started securing remote job connections. They pleaded for sustenance of the programme to benefit more Abia youths.

The ceremony, which attracted top government officials, featured presentations by the graduands on skills acquired and the presentation of certificates.
