“YOU ARE A PERFORMER!” – Obasanjo Hails Governor Alex Otti As He Commissions Strategic 46.36KM Abia Highway
Umuahia, April 11 – It was celebration, pride, and high praise in Umuahia on Friday as former President Olusegun Obasanjo, GCFR, hailed Governor Alex Otti of Abia State as a “performer,” a “goal-getter,” and a “miracle worker” during the commissioning of the newly reconstructed 46.36km Umuahia–Uzuakoli–Akara–Alayi–Abiriba Highway.
The historic commissioning ceremony, held at Unity Church, Uzuakoli, Bende LGA, drew dignitaries from across the state and beyond, including lawmakers, mayors, traditional rulers, and citizens who gathered to witness the unveiling of a project that has already been dubbed a “signature infrastructure” of the Otti administration.
In his captivating remarks, Chief Obasanjo did not mince words in his admiration for Governor Otti’s leadership style and delivery on promises. “You are a man of your word, a goal-getter, a performer,” the former President declared. “This road you have reconstructed – I have traveled on it before, and it was hell. Today, I say boldly: Alex Otti is a miracle worker.”
Obasanjo went further to urge the people of Abia not to “change a winning horse” when the time comes for elections, describing Otti as a rare breed in governance and an example of the kind of leadership Nigeria needs at all levels.
Governor Otti, visibly proud and humbled, described the road project as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to quality and purposeful leadership. “This commissioning is not just ceremonial,” he said, “it is a bold testimony of our resolve to do things differently. We have zero tolerance for shoddy jobs or the kickback culture that has plagued our systems.”
The Governor emphasized that the road, now renamed “Joe Irukwu Way” in honour of the late Ohanaeze Ndigbo President-General, would revolutionize transportation, reduce security threats, and boost economic activities across four local governments – Bende, Ohafia, Isuikwuato, and Umuahia North.
“This road will cut travel time, enhance the transport of farm produce, reduce food costs, empower our farmers, and open up our rural areas to economic opportunities,” he stated. “We are not just fixing roads, we are rebuilding lives, economies, and futures.”
The event saw commendations from key leaders including Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, Hon. Obi Aguocha, and Senator Chris Adighije, who described the road as a long-awaited dream come true. Community leaders, stakeholders, and transport officials also lauded the project’s quality and impact, describing it as a transformative milestone.
Commissioner for Works, Engr. Otumchere Oti, revealed that the road was divided into two strategic sections to expedite delivery, while Transport Commissioner Dr. Chimezie Ukaegbu and the President of Abia’s Cooperatives Union, Chief Chukwuma Azodo, emphasized the project’s economic benefits and improved driving conditions.
As the ribbon was cut and applause echoed through the hills of Uzuakoli, it was clear: Abia State is not just building roads—it is paving a new path for sustainable development, people-first governance, and regional pride. With Governor Alex Otti at the helm, the future looks bright—and it’s rolling on smooth asphalt.
