The Labour Party’s Presidential flagbearer in the 2023 general elections, His Excellency,Mr. Peter Obi, has lauded Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, for his remarkable leadership and visible progress within just two years in office.
Speaking during a Special Anniversary Sabbath Service at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Umuahia, Obi remarked that the Governor’s achievements are so evident, one doesn’t need a radio or the news to recognize the transformation.
Obi described the Governor’s second-year milestone as a celebration of “two years with a difference,” emphasizing that true change does not require a full decade. “People always say they need eight, ten, even twenty years to make an impact. But I’ve always maintained that a single day can bring change — and Abians are seeing that change today,” he said.
“Everybody is seeing it in Abia. You don’t need to tune to the radio. You don’t need people to tell you. There’s a difference. And that’s what we’re celebrating today.
Urging citizens to continue supporting Governor Otti with prayers, Obi called for a nationwide awakening among leaders to emulate Otti’s commitment to responsible governance. “It’s not our money — we are only trustees,” he said. “Let God touch our hearts to use public resources for the public good, just like it’s happening in Abia.”
Obi reaffirmed his passion for national progress above political ambition. “I am not desperate to be President,” he stated. “I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, with future leaders like Governor Otti at the helm.”
In his response, Governor Alex Otti attributed all achievements of his administration to divine guidance and grace. Quoting 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, he likened his efforts to planting and watering, but affirmed that the increase — the tangible progress — came from God. “We’ve worked hard, but success only came because God backed us up. That’s why all the glory belongs to Him.”
He extended heartfelt appreciation to his team across the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government, as well as to Mr. Obi for his continued support and the Church for their unwavering prayers.
Delivering the sermon titled “At the Fullness of Time”, Pastor Enyinnaya K. Uguru, former President of the Abia North Conference of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, urged leaders to remain grounded and forward-looking.
He cited Governor Otti’s perseverance through earlier electoral setbacks as divine preparation for a purposeful season of governance.
Pastor Uguru added that despite abandoning government media due to misinformation, he confidently affirms the Governor’s progress based on personal evidence.
He prayed for greater wisdom and grace for Governor Otti to continue his selfless service to the people.
The special service, themed “Two Years of Transformation: Sustaining the Momentum”, was graced by notable Abians, senior government officials, and included intercessory prayers for the state’s leadership.
