The Federal Government Partners With Mrs Otti To Give Out Palliatives To Persons With Disabilities
In line with the renewed hope agenda,the Federal Government has provided relief materials as palliatives to Abians.
The wife of the Abia state governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti thanked the federal government for extending support to Abia state while she distributed over 500 of 25kg bags of rice and cartons of condiments as palliatives to the disabled in the state .
In the programme tagged Boundless Support For Persons With Disabilities,she also called on philanthropists to donate to the welfare of the less privileged in a bid to alleviate and fight the impact
of economic challenges by providing food support against hunger and poverty to the most vulnerable
in the state.
Speaking at the event held at the Ministry of Agriculture premises in Umuahia, Mrs Otti said the day , October 16th was set aside as world Food Day to address the challenges facing food shortage in some parts of the world by the united nations and also to promote global awareness and action against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
She said the initiative is also dedicated to alleviating the impact of economic challenges by providing food support to the most vulnerable in the society.
Mrs Otti, while acknowledging the prevailing economic hardship in the country, a situation that has denied many families fare living standard, increased vulnerability to exploitation, increased crime rate, rape and social unrest, also said the federal government is working with relevant stakeholders in the food value chain to address the challenge of high cost of food items.
Earlier in their remarks, the commissioner for women affairs, Dr Mrs Maureen Aghoukwa and the Commissioner for poverty alleviation and social protection, Mrs Blessing Felix said the UN statistics revealed that there are over 400,000 persons living with disabilities in Abia state. This, she said is the more reason they cannot be neglected as they are significant to the growth and development of the state.
They ,however added that the present government is running all inclusive government where no body will be left out and appealed to all for massive support.
Delivering his address,the chairman of Abia State disability commission, Mr David Anyaele who commended the governor’s wife for her benevolence, also said that the event was part or world Food Day and noted that before now, the disability community would fight before they get what is due to them.
He urged the disabled family to sustain their prayers for the state and also be consistent in the payment of tax.
The palliatives got to every disabled present from the 17 LGAs of Abia state.
