Otti Rewrites Aba’s Story: From Erosion Nightmare To Five-Star Future As Ovom Road Reopens, Enyimba–Radisson Rises
History was both remembered and remade in Aba as the Executive Governor of Abia State, Alex Otti, commissioned the fully recovered and reconstructed Ovom Road ,once ravaged by a monstrous erosion and performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the long-abandoned Enyimba Hotel project, now reborn as the Enyimba–Radisson Hotel in partnership with global hospitality giant Radisson Blu.
The twin events marked not just infrastructure milestones, but powerful symbols of promises kept and a city on the rise.
For years, Ovom Road in Aba stood as a grim reminder of environmental devastation. A massive 42-metre gully stretching over 600 metres threatened homes, businesses, and lives. The area was widely described as hopeless,an environmental disaster waiting to consume everything in its path.
But in less than two years, the Otti administration turned the tide.
“With rigid pavement technology and necessary control measures, we have not only ended what could have been an interminable disaster, we have also prevented a recurrence of an environmental nightmare of such magnitude in the vicinity,” Governor Otti declared.
The rehabilitation works effectively filled a gully deep and wide enough to swallow an eight-storey building, restoring safe access and reconnecting the community to economic life.
Residents expressed profound relief and gratitude. They described the intervention as life-saving, noting that transportation has improved significantly, businesses are rebounding, and daily life has returned to normalcy.
The Director-General of the Greater Aba Development Authority, Architect Uche Ukeje, recalled Governor Otti’s 2024 visit to the erosion site, where he promised residents that their homes and livelihoods would be saved.
That promise, he said, has now been fulfilled.
From environmental restoration to economic renaissance, the Governor moved to the historic Enyimba Hotel site to flag off the reconstruction of a project first conceived over four decades ago.
Originally initiated during the era of Ukpabi Anthony Asika and later championed by former Governor Chief Sam Mbakwe, the Enyimba Hotel project had languished for 43 years.
Despite efforts by the Aba Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture and prominent business leaders to salvage it in the 1990s, the dream remained unrealised until now.
Under a strategic partnership with Radisson Blu, the project is being reimagined as a five-star hospitality destination ,Enyimba–Radisson Hotel.
Governor Otti revealed that within the next 12 months, a 120-room facility will be delivered, alongside a world-class convention centre designed to host high-profile corporate and public sector events.
Projecting bold growth, the Governor stated that within four years, the development is expected to expand into a 250-room five-star hotel complex, positioning Aba as a premier commercial and hospitality destination in West Africa.
“In the last 33 months, we have made strategic investments to align Aba’s business environment with the demands of a five-star hotel ecosystem,” Otti said. “This is about preparing Aba for global traffic in commerce, tourism, and investment.”
Speaking on behalf of Radisson Blu Senior Director for Development (Africa), Mr. Erwan Garnier, described the partnership as a strong statement that Abia is ready for serious global investment.
He assured that the brand would deliver a hotel of international standard, adding that Radisson Blu values its collaboration with the Abia State Government.
The Senator representing Abia South, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, commended Governor Otti for what he described as transformative and purposeful leadership. He noted that the reconstruction of Ovom Road and revival of the Enyimba Hotel reflect a deep understanding of the people’s needs and a clear development vision.
The contractor thank handled Ovom Road project, Chief Ifeanyi Okorie, recounted the once-deplorable state of the area and praised the Governor’s swift and decisive intervention, describing it as a move that saved lives and restored dignity to the community.
The Board Chairman of the Greater Aba Development Authority, Ide John Udeagbala, the Mayor of Aba North, Mr. Timothy Iheke, and key figures from the Aba business community, including Chief Leo Ike Okoye, also lauded the Governor’s strategic infrastructural push. They pledged continued support for his administration.
In an emotional moment, a minute silence was observed in honour of the pioneers and pathfinders of the Enyimba Hotel vision,titans of industry who invested resources and faith in a dream that is finally coming to fruition. The Governor confirmed that shareholders and their successors have been duly recognised and allocated shares in the revived venture.
With the commissioning of Ovom Road and the rebirth of Enyimba Hotel, Aba’s narrative is unmistakably shifting from erosion scars and abandoned dreams to resilience, renewal, and global relevance.
For residents and investors alike, the message is clear: Aba is open for business, and under Governor Alex Otti, the city’s comeback story is well underway.
