Otti Deepens Health Reforms, Partners U.S. Foundation As Aba Gets Major Infrastructure Boost
The Abia State Government has approved a strategic partnership with QANTUS Medical Foundation, a United States based medical group, to train all categories of health workers in the state, as Governor Alex Otti intensifies reforms across the health and infrastructure sectors.
Briefing journalists at the Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting chaired by the Governor, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the collaboration is aimed at sustaining momentum in healthcare capacity building and entrenching global best practices in service delivery.
According to him, the Governor has approved the collaboration between the State Ministry of Health and the U.S.-based healthcare consultancy outfit to drive a culture change in the state’s health system.
“This is aimed at training health workers to embrace best practices in the delivery of healthcare services,” Kanu stated.
The Commissioner disclosed that the Ministry of Health is set to recommence the functionalisation of 53 fully equipped Primary Healthcare Centres under the “Project Ekwueme” and IMPACT PHCs initiative, in a move expected to significantly strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the state.
He further revealed that the Abia State Digital Health Pilot Project has commenced in selected hospitals and Primary Healthcare Centres, designed to enhance efficiency, data management and overall healthcare outcomes.
In recognition of the sweeping reforms in the sector, Kanu announced that the Paediatric Association of Nigeria has scheduled its next Annual General Meeting to hold in Abia in 2027 , a development he described as a vote of confidence in the Governor’s healthcare transformation agenda.
On public health interventions, the Commissioner confirmed the successful conclusion of the Measles and Rubella vaccination campaign flagged off on February 3, 2026, with the state recording a 96 percent coverage , surpassing the 95 percent herd immunity target.
The campaign was conducted across schools and social institutions statewide, with over 1,000 vaccination teams deployed.
He added that collation of detailed figures is ongoing.
Responding to questions, the Commissioner for Health, Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche, explained that the partnership with QANTUS Medical Foundation aligns with Governor Otti’s commitment to global best practices in healthcare reform.
He noted that the foundation comprises experts who train doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other health professionals to adopt improved communication skills, behavioural standards and service delivery models.
“It is a phased, top-to-bottom approach. We will begin with doctors and nurses before cascading to healthcare workers at the local government level,” Prof. Uche explained.
He also reassured residents of the safety of vaccines, urging parents to ensure their children are fully immunised, stressing that vaccines are stored and administered in strict compliance with preservation protocols.
In further demonstration of its urban renewal drive, the Governor will on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, commission the Ovom Street Road project in Aba described as a landmark engineering feat.
Prince Kanu said the road project stands out because the site was first reclaimed from severe gully erosion before construction commenced.
“This project is indeed a watershed. It is one of the most captivating engineering feats of this administration,” he noted.Governor Otti will also flag off the reconstruction of the iconic Enyimba International Hotel, a move expected to boost economic activities and reposition Aba as a commercial hub.
Additionally, on Thursday, the Governor will flag off the construction of Ukwa East General Hospital at Ohanku in Ikwuorie Autonomous Community, Ukwa East LGA, expanding access to quality healthcare in rural communities.
The Commissioner emphasised that both the Ovom Road and Enyimba Hotel projects represent significant milestones in infrastructure renewal and economic revitalisation in Aba.
Present at the press briefing were the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ctz. Ukoha Njoku Ukoha.
With sweeping healthcare reforms, digital innovation, aggressive immunisation campaigns and landmark infrastructure projects, the Otti administration continues to redefine governance and development in Abia State.
