NSCDC Abia Command Launches 2026 International Civil Defence Day With Awareness Walk In Umuahia
The Abia State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has officially commenced activities to mark the 2026 International Civil Defence Day with a colourful and impactful Cross Town Awareness Walk in Umuahia, the Abia State capital.
The event, held under the leadership of the State Commandant, Commandant Akinsola Aderemi, drew participation from officers and men of the Command who marched through major streets of Umuahia to sensitize residents on critical issues bordering on environmental safety, disaster preparedness, and community resilience.
The awareness walk signals the beginning of a series of activities lined up by the Command to commemorate this year’s International Civil Defence Day. The initiative underscores the Corps’ continued commitment to safeguarding lives, protecting critical national assets, and promoting a culture of safety across communities in Abia State.
Promoting Environmental Responsibility
This year’s global theme, “Managing Environmental Risks for a Resilient and Sustainable Future,” emphasizes the urgent need for proactive strategies in tackling environmental challenges such as flooding, erosion, pollution, and climate-related disasters. It also calls for stronger collaboration between security agencies, government institutions, and citizens in building safer and more sustainable communities.
Addressing residents during the exercise, Commandant Aderemi reiterated the importance of public cooperation in mitigating environmental hazards. He stressed that environmental safety is a shared responsibility that requires active citizen participation, proper waste disposal practices, adherence to safety regulations, and timely reporting of potential risks to relevant authorities.
He further noted that disaster prevention remains more effective and less costly than disaster response, urging residents to embrace preventive measures and remain vigilant in their neighborhoods.
Community Engagement and Sensitization
As officers moved through strategic locations within Umuahia, they engaged members of the public, distributed informational materials, and educated shop owners, motorists, and pedestrians on the importance of environmental consciousness and emergency preparedness.
Residents were enlightened on practical steps to reduce environmental risks, including clearing drainage systems, avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and promptly alerting authorities about suspicious activities or environmental threats.
The Command also highlighted the vital role communities play in intelligence gathering and early warning systems, which significantly enhance public safety and disaster management efforts.
Strengthening Public Safety Through Awareness
International Civil Defence Day is observed annually to recognize the efforts of civil defence organizations worldwide and to raise awareness about their roles in protecting citizens during emergencies and disasters. For the Abia State Command, the awareness walk serves not only as a commemorative activity but also as a strategic platform to deepen public understanding of the Corps’ mandate.
The NSCDC reaffirmed its dedication to working closely with other security agencies, environmental bodies, and community leaders to ensure a safer and more resilient Abia State.
The 2026 celebration will continue with additional programs aimed at reinforcing environmental risk management and promoting sustainable practices across the state.
