Governor Otti Says Ukwa Seaport Project On Hold Until Funding Is Secured

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, OFR, has said that work on the proposed Ukwa Seaport project will not commence until adequate funds are secured, stressing that his administration will only embark on projects that are viable and fully fundable to avoid abandonment.

The Governor stated this while receiving a delegation of the Ezumezu Ndoki Patriotic Association at Government House, Umuahia.

Governor Otti explained that feasibility studies conducted by Chinese partners revealed that about 19.5 kilometres of dredging would be required to link the seaport to the high sea, making the project highly capital-intensive.

“Before we start any project, we must be sure it is viable and that funds are available to complete it. We won’t start and abandon midway. We already have approvals and licences, but we will only move forward once we are certain of adequate financing,” the Governor said.

On road projects, Gov. Otti assured the Ukwa East people that no road construction in the area has been abandoned midway. He explained that work is ongoing on the Akirikaobu and Obohia roads, despite initial challenges, and disclosed that new engineering solutions are being deployed to make the projects sustainable.

The Governor reassured the people that his administration is committed to delivering all road projects across the state, while also promising inclusive development for Ukwa East.

Earlier, the Mayor of Ukwa East, Mr. Chibunna Akara, said the people are pleased with the new Abia under Gov. Otti and are eager to align with his government.

The leader of the delegation and President of Ezumezu Ndoki Patriotic Association, High Chief I. N. Ahunanya, commended the Governor for his infrastructural achievements and appealed for the completion of projects in Ukwa. He also pledged the association’s support for Gov. Otti’s re-election in 2027.

The meeting was attended by senior government officials and stakeholders from Ukwa East.
