Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has formally inaugurated the new Fisher Educational Development Trust (FEDT) Board for Government College Umuahia, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to revitalizing public education in the state.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the Cabinet Office, Umuahia, was presided over by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, on behalf of the Governor.
The newly constituted board is chaired by the National President of the Government College Umuahia Old Boys Association, Dr. Chinedu Ahaiwe.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Kalu emphasized that Governor Otti’s educational initiatives are designed to create an enabling environment where students can thrive and compete globally. He underscored the importance of restoring the lost glory of Government College Umuahia, a school historically known as the “Eton of the East.”
“The government aims to implement initiatives that improve society, create a better environment, and ensure that schools like Government College Umuahia are restored to their former glory,” Prof. Kalu stated. “What we are doing today aligns with the broader vision and action plan of the government—initiatives that promote public good, development, and a society where everyone can flourish.”
He further noted that the government’s broader efforts ranging from improving infrastructure, paying salaries and pensions, to fixing healthcare and nutrition—are all focused on building a better Abia for future generations.
Responding on behalf of the new board, Dr. Chinedu Ahaiwe expressed deep appreciation to the State Government for endorsing the Old Boys Association’s proposal to take over the school’s management. He traced the school’s illustrious history back to its founding in the 1920s by Rev. Robert Fisher and described the FEDT as a strategic vehicle to drive the school’s restoration.
“Alarmed by the institution’s decline, we approached the government with a proposal to take over its management and preserve its rich heritage. We are grateful to the government for accepting our proposal,” Dr. Ahaiwe said.
He commended the outgoing pioneer board for laying a solid foundation over the past 11 years and expressed hope that the new board would build on their legacy. Dr. Ahaiwe also outlined key expectations from the state government to support the board’s mandate.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by top government functionaries including the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Austin Okezie Meregini, Permanent Secretaries, and distinguished members of the Old Boys Association.
