The Abia State Government, alongside family, colleagues, and dignitaries, has honoured the retiring Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Echefula Anugwa, for his outstanding 35 years of dedicated service.
The colourful pulling-out parade, held at the NIS Headquarters in Umuahia, attracted top government officials and stakeholders who gathered to celebrate a career defined by discipline, innovation, and unwavering commitment to national development.
Representing Governor Alex Otti, the Deputy Governor, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, described the event as more than a ceremonial farewell, but a celebration of legacy and selfless service. He commended Anugwa’s inspiring rise from humble beginnings in Obingwa Local Government Area to the pinnacle of his career, noting that his journey reflects resilience, hard work, and dedication.
Emetu further described the retired officer as a proud ambassador of Abia State, whose contributions to the Nigeria Immigration Service will remain enduring. He highlighted Anugwa’s role in key institutional reforms, including the computerisation of accounting systems and the introduction of a revenue e-payment platform, which enhanced transparency and operational efficiency.
The Deputy Governor also applauded Anugwa’s commitment to continuous learning, citing his academic progression from a National Certificate in Education to multiple advanced degrees, alongside ongoing doctoral studies.
In his remarks, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe described the retirement as a transition into a new phase of life, commending Anugwa for his integrity, professionalism, and exemplary service throughout his career.
Also speaking, the Comptroller General of the NIS, Kemi Nanna Nandap, represented by ACG A.L. Kamdare, praised Anugwa’s discipline and results-driven approach, noting that these qualities distinguished him and contributed to his rise to a top leadership position.
Similarly, the Abia State Controller of NIS, Justina Oweh, described Anugwa as a visionary administrator whose years of service significantly advanced institutional growth.
In his farewell address, Anugwa reflected on his journey in the Service, which began in March 1991 when he enlisted as a Senior Inspector. He recalled his postings to Cross River and Enugu states, as well as his extensive service at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja.
He charged officers and men of the Service to uphold professionalism, integrity, and continuous self-improvement, while urging them to shun corruption and adopt a humane approach in the discharge of their duties.
The event drew senior NIS officers, government officials, and well-wishers, all united in celebrating a distinguished career and a lasting legacy of service.
