Abia Unveils Bold Vision: 25-Year Greater Aba Master Plan, Expanded Healthcare, Housing, and Security Push
The Abia State Government has announced a rollout of transformative initiatives, including the launch of the 25-Year Greater Aba Master Plan, major healthcare advancements, power infrastructure restoration, and tightened security operations,marking a bold new chapter in the state’s development agenda.
Speaking at the Government House in Umuahia during a post-Executive Council media briefing , the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, revealed that the long-awaited Greater Aba Master Plan—crafted in collaboration with the Greater Aba Development Authority and UN-Habitat is set for official launch.
The plan, a comprehensive blueprint for urban regeneration, will serve as a guiding framework for infrastructure, economy, sustainability, and resilience in the state’s commercial capital.
“The master plan rests on four pillars: road infrastructure and connectivity; economic development through upgraded industrial zones; sustainable urban expansion; and terrestrial resilience, especially in flood-prone areas,” Kanu explained.
In the health sector, the Commissioner shared that the Abia State Social Health Insurance Scheme has so far recorded 91,227 enrollees—an encouraging milestone. Approval has now been given to extend the scheme into the informal sector, with rollout expected in the coming weeks.
He further announced the operational readiness of a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia. “This ICU is fully equipped to handle emergencies and specialized surgeries, marking a significant upgrade in our healthcare delivery,” he noted, while also confirming that the state recorded no cases of mpox, diphtheria, cholera, or Lassa fever during epidemiological week 23.
In a move to address housing needs, Kanu disclosed that the state will soon break ground for four new estates—Valley View, Mgbarakuma, Mbaisii, and Obehie,while four others are already in development under the second phase.
On education and infrastructure, the Commissioner highlighted progress in the Abia State University (ABSU) power restoration project, with Phase 1 already completed and lighting restored across key areas. Hostel renovations at ABSU are also near completion, with electrical and plumbing works finalized.
Turning to security, Kanu acknowledged recent breaches in the Umunneochi area that resulted in fatalities, but assured that security agencies have been fully mobilized. “Governor Otti is firm on his position,no part of Abia will be surrendered to criminal elements,” he stressed.
In support, Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, announced that the state has commenced the process of transferring regulatory authority from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to a newly created Abia State Electricity Regulatory Authority. This move, he explained, would empower the state to regulate electricity generation, distribution, transmission, and metering locally.
Mr. Monday also revealed plans to rehabilitate the CKC Water Scheme in Aba. “This scheme will deliver potable water to residents in Aba and its environs, in line with Governor Otti’s pledge to improve living conditions,” he said.
As part of the administration’s Project Ekwueme initiative, the fourth Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) will be commissioned this Friday in Ngwu, Bende LGA, further reinforcing the state’s health infrastructure.
