Abia State Government Restates Its Commitment Towards A Reformed Education with The Introduction Of A New Curriculum And Electronic Learning Infrastructure.
The Honourable commissioner for Basic and secondary education,Elder Goodluck Chinedu Ubochi made this known during an interactive session with principals of secondary schools across the state.
He said the newly introduced secondary school curriculum which aims to ensure that every student graduates with at least two skills was a welcomed development and intended to the unemployment problems in the country and by extension contribute positively to the nations economy.
The Commissioner further said the Dr Alex Otti led administration was committed to reviving the educational system in the state by earmarking 251 schools for renovation in addition to the ongoing training off 1200 primary school teachers and another 800 of their counterparts from the secondary schools that will be equiped with electronic tablets upon completion of the program.He also mentioned that the governor had equally approved a running cost of 100,000 naira each to principals of Government schools to ensure a hitch free management of schools and appealed to them to take ownership of their structures and not allow them to get to deplorable conditions.
Also speaking at the event the permanent secretary of the ministry, Mr Ikechukwu Oriuwa said there is no better time to be a teacher in the state than now when the present government is committed to prompt payment of salaries, training and retraining of teachers, harmonization of retired workers entitlements and also the award of twenty percent of being state’s budget to education.
He re-emphasised on the need for students to aquire two major skills upon graduation from their schools stressing that such initiative could help ease the unemployment problems bedevilling the nation.
Earlier in her speech the DIC SEMB who was also the host expressed joy at the educational reforms by the governor of the state geared towards recreating a new Abia .She thanked the Honourable commissioner for making out time to visit the agency noting that it was forerunner of greater things to come.
Also Speaking,the Executive Chairman of Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB),Lady Lydia Onuoha said the teachers were favored by witnessing the reforms in the education sector while still in service.She eulogized the governor for approving running costs for schools and warned that the funds must not be converted for other purposes apart from schools administration and also be retired at the month end in order to access another one.
She charged principals of both junior and secondary schools to work in collaboration and eschew conflicts of interests in order to achieve success in their education of children.She also enjoined them to involve the communities where their schools are located in the schools decision making and security and also revealed that her agency will organize a mini financial management training that will hold in the three senatorial zones to equip teachers on how to effectively manage the monthly allocations that will be sent to their schools bank account.
